Download Download Version

v26.4.30 · 182.8 MB

Free, open-source video editor with multi-track timeline, broad format support, and no limitations.

Core Features

  • Multi-track timeline with drag-and-drop
  • Comprehensive video filters and color grading
  • Native 4K/8K proxy editing
  • Hardware encoding (Intel QSV, NVENC, AMD AMF)
  • Customizable keyboard shortcuts

What It Can't Do

  • First launch may be slow (loading plugins/thumbnails); be patient. 2. Custom builds require all dependencies (MLT, Qt6, etc.) properly installed. 3. Enable proxy editing for high-resolution clips to avoid lag. 4. Some filters (e.g., stabilizer) are CPU-intensive; enable hardware acceleration in settings.

Use Cases

  • Vlog editing and effects
  • Social media content creation
  • Screen recording trimming and subtitling
  • Professional color correction and audio post-production

Detailed Introduction

Shotcut is a professional-grade, open-source video editor available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It supports a vast range of formats via FFmpeg, offers multi-track timeline editing, advanced audio/video filters, color grading, and proxy editing. With a modular architecture and hardware acceleration (Intel QSV, NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF), it delivers smooth performance even on modest hardware. Shotcut is actively developed under GPLv3, with a large user community and regular updates. Unlike many free editors, it has no watermarks, no limited features, and no paid tiers.

Troubleshooting & FAQ (2)

Troubleshooting
Why does Shotcut show 'Value 33366.000000 for parameter frame_duration out of range' when exporting WebM with Opus audio?

This is a known bug in the MLT framework's Opus encoder, triggered when exporting WebM with Opus audio. It was fixed in MLT commit 3c5daaa97. Update Shotcut to a version that includes this MLT fix (likely after 26.5.1). If you cannot update immediately, as a workaround, export audio separately and mux manually or use a different audio codec.

Troubleshooting
How to fix 'This program requires the SDL 2 library' error when running Shotcut AppImage on Gentoo Linux?

This error occurs because the bundled SDL2 in the AppImage is linked against Wayland/libdecor, which may be missing. Two solutions: 1. Quick workaround: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib64/libSDL2-2.0.so.0 ./shotcut-linux-x86_64-*.AppImage 2. Install missing libraries: sudo emerge -av dev-libs/wayland gui-libs/libdecor
