High-performance S3-compatible distributed object storage written in Rust, offering MinIO-like simplicity with a permissive Apache 2.0 license, memory safety, and no telemetry.

v1.0.3 · 107.1 MB

A Rust-based, Apache 2.0-licensed MinIO alternative for S3-compatible object storage.

Core Features

  • Broad S3 API compatibility with a public compatibility matrix
  • Built in Rust for memory safety and high performance without GC pauses
  • Distributed and single-node modes with healing, bitrot protection, and pool expansion
  • Web console, Kubernetes Helm charts, IAM/OIDC, and audit logging included
  • Versioning, object lock (WORM), encryption, KMS, lifecycle, and cross-site replication

What It Can't Do

  • •This is server infrastructure software, not a desktop app—basic ops skills are required. Always change the default credentials before exposing it to a network. The Local and Static KMS backends are for development only; use Vault or AWS KMS in production. S3 Tables and MinIO on-disk compatibility are preview features, and objects encrypted by MinIO cannot be read by RustFS—test before migrating. Swift API and SFTP require opt-in compile-time features and are not in the default build.

Use Cases

  • Building high-throughput data lake storage for AI and big data workloads
  • Self-hosted private cloud object storage without AGPL licensing risk
  • Lightweight, secure storage for edge and IoT gateways
  • Migrating from or coexisting with MinIO and Ceph clusters

RustFS is a high-performance, distributed object storage system built in Rust, positioned as a modern alternative to MinIO. Its biggest differentiators are licensing and safety: while MinIO ships under AGPL v3, RustFS uses the permissive Apache 2.0 license, eliminating copyleft concerns for commercial use, and Rust's memory safety avoids the GC pauses common in Go-based storage. It provides broad S3 API compatibility (tracked in a public compatibility matrix), versioning, object lock (WORM), server-side encryption, KMS (Vault/AWS KMS), lifecycle management, bucket and site replication, plus native OpenStack Swift API and Keystone authentication. A web console, Kubernetes Helm charts, and migration/coexistence support with MinIO and Ceph ease adoption. Optimized for data lakes, AI, and big data, it collects no telemetry. S3 Tables and MinIO on-disk compatibility remain preview features, and MinIO-encrypted objects are not readable by RustFS.

Uninstall Info

For Docker deployments: run docker stop rustfs && docker rm rustfs, then docker rmi rustfs/rustfs, and delete the mounted data directory. For binary deployments: stop the process and remove the executable plus the data directory. If you registered a systemd service, disable and remove it as well.

No Extra Dependencies

Ready to use after download. No additional runtime required.
