Free, open-source second-display tool for macOS that works with iPhones, iPads, and spare Macs over USB or WiFi — no subscription, dongle, or account required.

Turn iPhone, iPad, or a spare Mac into a real second display for your Mac — free and open source.

Core Features

  • True extended display (not mirroring) with portrait/landscape rotation
  • Low-latency USB streaming via built-in usbmuxd, plus zero-config WiFi discovery
  • Retina/HiDPI output matching the device panel pixel-for-pixel
  • Touch input: tap to click, drag, and two-finger scrolling
  • Spare Mac (macOS 12+) as a Retina display over WiFi, Thunderbolt, or Ethernet

What It Can't Do

  • •The purple screen-recording indicator in the menu bar is a standard macOS privacy notice and cannot be hidden. WiFi mode silently fails unless Local Network permission is granted on both devices. Your USB cable must support data transfer — charge-only cables will not work. The sending Mac requires macOS 14+, while a receiving Mac needs only macOS 12+. On WiFi, set AirDrop to Contacts Only, otherwise the Everyone mode causes visible stutter. Apple Pencil, keyboard/mouse input from the receiving Mac, and audio are not supported yet but are on the roadmap.

Use Cases

  • Add a portable second monitor to a MacBook using the iPad or iPhone you already own
  • Repurpose an old Mac (2015 or later) as an extended Retina display
  • Replace paid tools like Duet Display or Luna Display with a free, auditable alternative
  • Extend your screen across devices signed into different Apple IDs, where Sidecar fails

OpenDisplay is a free, open-source (GPL-3.0) utility that extends your Mac's screen onto an iPhone, iPad, or spare Mac — a real extended display, not just mirroring. It streams Retina-sharp video over USB or WiFi with a low-latency H.264/HEVC pipeline, and even turns your iPhone into a touchscreen for macOS with tap, drag, and two-finger scroll. Compared with Apple Sidecar, it works with iPhones, different Apple IDs, and older Macs (macOS 12+ as receiver); compared with Duet Display or Luna Display, it costs nothing and needs no subscription, hardware dongle, or sign-up. Everything is self-hosted — your screen never touches a third-party server. With 5.8k GitHub stars, hardware video encoding, and zero-config Bonjour discovery, it's currently the most complete free Sidecar alternative available.
