This is a known Joomla 4.4.x PATCH merge bug. When rules is omitted, ApiController::save() merges the database value, which is a JSON string such as "[8,1535]". The intarray form filter then coerces that string to [0], silently overwriting the existing rules.

Workaround: do not send a partial PATCH without rules. First GET the level, preserve its current rules array, then PATCH the full attribute set:

If rules has already been changed to [0], PATCH the correct rule IDs back using the same method. Apply this GET-merge-PATCH pattern until a Joomla release fixes the array/JSON merge behavior.

This is a confirmed regression in Joomla 6.2.0: the Language Switcher ignores menu item associations and always generates links to the homepage of the selected language, in both directions. It affects native Joomla articles and menu associations even when the System – Language Filter plugin has Item Associations enabled and all associations are correctly configured. There is currently no configuration fix — the only verified workaround is to restore your Joomla 6.1.4 backup (downgrade to 6.1.4), which immediately resolves the problem. Before downgrading, verify the basics: (1) System – Language Filter plugin is enabled with 'Item Associations' set to Yes, (2) menu item associations still exist under Menus > your menu > item > Associations tab. If both are correct, the issue is the 6.2.0 core regression — stay on 6.1.4 and wait for an official patch release before upgrading.
