The official graphical interface for Homebrew on macOS—manage packages with clicks instead of commands.
Core Features
- Officially maintained by the Homebrew team
- Browse, install, update and remove packages graphically
- Full transparency into the underlying brew commands
- Services tab shows background service status and log paths
- Native SwiftUI app with community-contributed translations
What It Can't Do
- •It is a frontend, not a replacement: Homebrew must already be installed for the app to work. The Services tab is currently read-only, so starting or stopping services still requires Terminal. App configuration must go in the brew.env file—shell aliases and exported variables are ignored. macOS only; no Windows or Linux version.
Use Cases
- CLI-averse users installing and managing Mac software
- Bulk-updating installed Homebrew packages with one click
- Inspecting background service status, ownership and log paths
Detailed Introduction
BrewUI is Homebrew's official macOS GUI, built by the Homebrew team to make package management approachable for users who prefer graphical interfaces over Terminal. Unlike third-party Homebrew frontends such as Cork (paid) or the aging Cakebrew, BrewUI is officially maintained, free and open source under AGPL-3.0, and written in native SwiftUI with strict concurrency for a fast, Mac-native feel. Its standout design principle is transparency: the app never hides what Homebrew is doing underneath, so users can see and trust every operation while staying fully compatible with the brew CLI. You can discover, install, update and manage formulae and casks, browse data from the Homebrew JSON API, and inspect background services—including status, owner and log paths—through a read-only Services tab. Community-sourced translations gracefully fall back to English when incomplete. Installation takes one command: brew install --cask homebrew-app. The project is stable and under active development, with reproducible tooling (pinned SwiftFormat/SwiftLint via Mint) for contributors. Note that it requires an existing Homebrew installation and cannot start or stop services from the GUI.
