An open-source JetBrains IDE that runs parallel coding agents in isolated git worktrees with durable project memory.
Core Features
- Isolated git-worktree workspaces let multiple AI agents code in parallel without touching your checkout
- Full IDE workbench: Monaco editors, terminals, file tree with live git marks, and anchored diff review
- Living specs: a graph of SPEC.md files gives the agent durable project knowledge across sessions
- Concurrent chat sessions with per-session models, live token/cost readouts, subagents, and shared plans
- MCP server support with per-tool approval, plus portable skills and guided workflows
What It Can't Do
- •Heads up: there is no Intel macOS build — Apple Silicon only. Linux requires glibc 2.38+ plus GTK3, WebKitGTK 4.1, AppIndicator, and librsvg (Ubuntu 24.04 or newer recommended). The app includes no free model quota: you must sign in with JetBrains AI or bring your own API keys. git must be on your PATH. It is still a JetBrains incubator project with fast-moving releases, so expect rough edges on critical work.
Use Cases
- Running several coding agents in parallel on separate features, then merging the best result
- Keeping AI aligned with long-term project intent via versioned living specs
- Developers who want an agentic IDE without subscriptions or provider lock-in
- Reviewing agent diffs with anchored comments before committing each step
ThinkRail is an open-source agentic IDE from JetBrains, built around the pi coding agent. Each task runs in an isolated git-worktree workspace, so multiple agents can code in parallel without touching your main checkout — merge the winner, discard the rest. A graph of living SPEC.md files gives the agent durable project knowledge that survives sessions, while a real workbench (Monaco editors, terminals, file tree, diff review) keeps you in control. It supports MCP servers with per-tool approval, concurrent chat sessions with live token and cost readouts, and ships as both a native desktop app and a browser-based CLI. Compared with Cursor, ThinkRail is fully open source (Apache-2.0) and provider-agnostic — sign in with JetBrains AI or bring any API key, with no subscription lock-in. Compared with terminal-first agents like Claude Code, it offers true workspace isolation via git worktrees and a persistent spec graph, making parallel agent workflows safer and more auditable.
