Self-hosted RSS reader with smart folders, semantic event grouping, explainable recommendations, and a desktop app.

Smart Download

Download Download Version

v2.3.0 · 138.1 MB

A self-hosted RSS reader with AI-powered story clustering and recommendations.

Core Features

  • Three-pane reading interface with keyboard shortcuts, text-to-speech, and mobile gestures
  • Smart Folders: saved search queries that automatically collect new matching articles
  • Semantic Events: groups coverage of the same story from different sources for easy comparison
  • Interest Islands and explainable recommendations that learn from your reading feedback
  • Advanced search combining keywords, dates, tags, read state, and score filters

What It Can't Do

  • •AI features (event clustering, recommendations, summaries) require setting up the optional local inference service, and the desktop app downloads models on first launch, consuming significant disk space and memory. Version 2.4 does not support MariaDB — only SQLite or MySQL 8.4 work. The desktop app lacks scheduled crawling, so feeds refresh manually. The conversational assistant needs a separately configured OpenAI provider with associated costs. Basic Docker and server administration knowledge is required, so there is a learning curve for non-technical users.

Use Cases

  • News power users who follow many feeds and want reports about the same event automatically grouped together
  • Researchers building a personal knowledge base with saved search rules and automated tagging
  • Self-hosting enthusiasts who want to sync reading progress across devices while keeping full data ownership

RSSMonster is a self-hosted RSS reader built with Vue and Express, designed to turn information overload into organized reading. Highlights include Smart Folders (saved searches that auto-update), Semantic Events clustering coverage of the same story across sources, and Interest Islands that learn your preferences for explainable recommendations. Compared to Miniflux or FreshRSS, it adds optional local AI inference for semantic search, summaries, and quality scoring, plus an Electron desktop app for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Storage options include SQLite or MySQL, with Fever and Google Reader API compatibility, OPML import/export, generated RSS feeds, regex-based automation, text-to-speech, and a dark-mode PWA. MIT licensed with Docker deployment.
