Epic Games' open-source graphical multi-process debugger for Windows and Linux x64, featuring a custom debug info format and a high-performance linker optimized for massive projects.

A modern graphical multi-process debugger from Epic Games, built for speed on huge codebases.

Core Features

  • Graphical multi-process debugging with a modern UI
  • Custom RDI debug info format for faster symbol loading on large projects
  • RAD Linker with MSVC-compatible syntax, about 50% faster links on huge binaries
  • Local x64 debugging on Windows and Linux
  • Open source under MIT, actively maintained by Epic Games

What It Can't Do

  • •The project is in alpha, so expect occasional crashes or missing features, and report issues with dump files on GitHub. It supports local x64 debugging only, with no remote debugging or ARM support yet. Linux support is very early, so Windows is the recommended platform. The linker's large-page option can fragment memory on standard Windows setups and should only be used in VMs or Docker. It is not a full IDE and provides no editing or build features.

Use Cases

  • Debugging large C/C++ game or engine codebases
  • Replacing WinDbg for everyday native Windows debugging
  • Teams frequently linking multi-gigabyte executables

Detailed Introduction

RAD Debugger is an open-source, native, user-mode, multi-process graphical debugger developed by Epic Games under the MIT license. It currently targets local x64 debugging on Windows and Linux, with remote debugging and more architectures on the roadmap. Unlike traditional debuggers that parse PDB or DWARF directly, it converts them on-demand into the custom RAD Debug Info (RDI) format, which is optimized for fast parsing of huge debug datasets. The project also ships the RAD Linker, a high-performance MSVC-compatible linker that delivers roughly 50% faster link times on gigantic executables and can natively emit RDI to avoid broken PDBs overflowing 32-bit tables. Compared with WinDbg, it provides a far more modern and approachable graphical experience; compared with the Visual Studio debugger, it is lightweight, standalone, and built for multi-process workflows. The project is currently in alpha, so users should expect rough edges and are encouraged to report issues.

Troubleshooting & FAQ (1)

Troubleshooting
Why is there no usage README in the build folder after compiling raddebugger?

The usage README is generated by the metaprogram build, which was disabled by default. To generate it manually, pass meta to the build script:

./build.sh meta

This creates the README in the build folder. The issue was later fixed by the maintainer, so first-time builds of newer versions generate the README automatically.
