Core Features
- Dedicated client accounts with usernames and passwords
- Client groups for one-click sharing with multiple clients
- Auto-expiring files with time-limited access
- Download limits to control file distribution
- Client uploads — let clients send files back to you
What It Can't Do
- •Requires PHP 8.2+ (older versions won't work); 2. Needs URL rewriting support (Apache mod_rewrite or Nginx config); 3. Only supports MySQL/MariaDB, not PostgreSQL; 4. Email notifications require SMTP configuration; 5. You must set up HTTPS yourself for secure data transfer.
Use Cases
- Accountants sharing financial reports with clients, auto-expire after 1 week
- Photographers delivering retouched images with 3-download limit
- Government agencies sharing confidential documents with external partners via secure login
- Freelancers allowing clients to upload reference materials through a branded portal
ProjectSend is a free, open-source, self-hosted platform designed specifically for sharing files with external clients, partners, and team members. It provides dedicated client accounts with usernames and passwords, allows grouping clients for bulk sharing, and supports auto-expiring files, download limits, and client uploads. Features include two-factor authentication, S3-compatible storage, 70+ languages, customizable client portal themes, and detailed activity logging. Unlike general-purpose file sync tools, ProjectSend focuses on simplifying the workflow of sending files to people outside your organization, with low setup requirements and the ability to run on shared hosting. It's maintained since 2011 and is ideal for freelancers, agencies, accountants, photographers, and NGOs who need full control over their data without monthly subscription fees.
