v1.9.2 · 316.9 MB
Open-source, privacy-first voice dictation app that types what you say with fully offline or cloud models, available on all desktop platforms.
Core Features
- Global hotkey voice dictation with auto-paste into any application
- Fully offline local transcription using NVIDIA Parakeet or Whisper — audio never leaves your device
- Dictation + translation mode: speak in one language, paste in another
- Built-in AI assistant with support for GPT-5, Claude, Gemini, local models, and more via BYOK
- Meeting transcription with live speaker diarization for Zoom, Teams, and FaceTime, plus calendar sync
What It Can't Do
- •Cloud-based AI assistants (e.g., GPT-5 or Claude) require your own API key; without one, only local models are available
- •On Intel Macs, speaker identification and semantic search are disabled; meeting transcription and keyword search still work
- •A reasonably modern OS version is recommended, as OpenWhispr relies on Electron 41
Use Cases
- Hands-free writing: dictate emails, docs, or code at the speed of speech instead of typing
- Effortless meeting capture: automatically generate speaker-labeled transcripts and share them with your team
OpenWhispr is a free, open-source voice-to-text dictation application that works across macOS, Windows, and Linux. Press a hotkey, speak, and your words are typed at the cursor position in any app. Unlike commercial tools WisprFlow and Granola, OpenWhispr prioritizes privacy: choose fully offline local transcription with NVIDIA Parakeet or Whisper so audio never leaves your device, or use cloud models with a bring-your-own-key setup. It also includes an AI assistant, meeting transcription with live speaker identification, calendar integration, and searchable voice notes. A public API and MCP server are available for programmatic control. Licensed under MIT.
