Turn your existing coding agents into research agents that read papers, run experiments, and remember every result, all locally.
Core Features
- Works with the coding agents you already use: Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Cursor, and Google Antigravity
- Grounds hypotheses in live literature from alphaXiv, bioRxiv, and PubMed
- Runs experiments on local machines, SSH, Slurm, Kubernetes, Modal, Ray, or Hugging Face Jobs
- Records every experiment in a local SQL database so agents learn from past results
- Local-first and private: no code or agent traces collected, and analytics are opt-out
What It Can't Do
- •Windows support is in beta and requires Git for Windows; the Linux build needs glibc 2.35+. OpenResearch is not a model itself, so it needs a coding agent like Claude Code or Codex, or a local model via Ollama or LM Studio. Release builds send opt-out anonymized analytics, which you can disable in Settings or with the command orx telemetry off. On managed Macs, the unsigned CLI installer may be blocked, so use the signed desktop app instead.
Use Cases
- Researchers who want an AI copilot to review papers, propose hypotheses, and run experiments end to end
- ML engineers automating experiment sweeps with a searchable, agent-readable history of every run
OpenResearch is an open-source, local-first workspace from alphaXiv that turns everyday coding agents—Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Cursor, and Google Antigravity—into full research agents. It lets agents review literature via alphaXiv, bioRxiv, and PubMed, develop hypotheses, run experiments on your choice of compute (local, SSH, Slurm, Kubernetes, Modal, Ray, Hugging Face Jobs, or managed cloud), and store every log, artifact, and result in a local SQL database so agents learn from past runs. Unlike cloud-hosted experiment trackers such as Weights & Biases or MLflow, OpenResearch is local-first: your code, conversations, and data never leave your machine, and analytics are opt-out with a single toggle. Compared with building a custom agent stack with LangChain, it works out of the box with the coding agents you already use, adding research memory and literature grounding instead of replacing your tools. Available as a desktop app for macOS, Windows (beta), and Linux, plus an optional CLI (orx).
