Open-source, offline-first desktop photo manager for macOS, Windows, and Linux—local AI search, folder-first workflow, no cloud account or subscription required.

Smart Download

Download Download Version

v0.3.3 · 267.7 MB

A private, offline-first photo manager with on-device AI search for large local libraries.

Core Features

  • Local AI search by text prompt, visual similarity, and face clustering—all processed offline
  • Folder-first workflow: works with existing folders, no import, no database lock-in
  • Optimized for smooth browsing across libraries with 100k+ files
  • Duplicate cleanup with reclaimable-space summaries and bulk removal
  • Interactive map view for geotagged photos and videos

What It Can't Do

  • •The Windows installer is unsigned, so SmartScreen may block the download—click 'Keep anyway'. Tags, ratings, collections, and Smart Albums are stored only in Lap's local database, not embedded in the files, so they will not carry over to other apps or travel with exported photos. Renaming or moving files outside Lap (in Finder or Explorer) can break that organization—perform file operations inside Lap and back up the database via Settings → Storage. Lap offers no cloud sync, no mobile app, and is not a backup solution.

Use Cases

  • Organizing large family photo archives and finding old photos by date, place, or face
  • A privacy-focused replacement for cloud photo services like Google Photos
  • Photographers managing RAW+JPEG pairs and culling shoots locally
  • Browsing albums on NAS or disconnected drives via cached thumbnails

Lap is a free, open-source desktop photo manager for macOS, Windows, and Linux built around a simple promise: your photos never leave your disk. Unlike Google Photos or iCloud, there is no account, no forced upload, and no subscription—everything, including AI search, runs locally. Compared with veteran tools like digiKam, Lap feels more modern and avoids import lock-in by working directly with your existing folders. It is optimized for libraries of 100,000+ files, with fast browsing by date, folder, location, camera, tags, ratings, and faces. On-device AI powers text-prompt search in 50+ languages, visual similarity, smart tags, and face clustering without sending anything to the cloud. Practical extras include Smart Albums, duplicate cleanup with reclaimable-space summaries, an interactive map view, a four-pane culling viewer, photo collages, built-in crop and rotate edits, Apple Live Photos and Google Motion Photos playback, and unified RAW + JPEG/HEIC pairs across 60+ formats.
