Feynman is a terminal-based open-source AI research agent that searches papers, writes literature reviews, ranks research, and audits claims against code.
Core Features
- Ask natural questions to get cited research briefs from papers and the web
- Run deepresearch for multi-agent parallel investigation with synthesis and verification
- Use PaperRank to decide what to read first with transparent evidence on citations, methods, reproducibility, and provenance
- Built-in literature review, paper-vs-code audit, and replication planning workflows
- Supports local models (LM Studio, Ollama, vLLM, LiteLLM) and hosted providers like OpenRouter and GitHub Copilot
What It Can't Do
- •feynman update only refreshes internal Pi packages, not the standalone app; rerun the installer to upgrade the runtime
- •On headless/SSH systems, OpenRouter OAuth requires pasting the redirect URL or using OPENROUTER_API_KEY instead
- •The replicate command only plans checks; it will not execute until you explicitly choose an environment
Use Cases
- Quickly get a cited summary of what is known about a research topic
- Audit a paper by comparing its claims to the public codebase, or plan a replication study
Detailed Introduction
Feynman is an open-source AI research agent delivered as a powerful CLI and a local science workbench. Unlike generic chat assistants, Feynman is built specifically for research workflows: it searches academic papers and the web, then produces cited summaries, literature reviews, and evidence-ranked reading lists. Its standout features are the PaperRank system for deciding what to read first, a deepresearch mode that spawns parallel researchers with synthesis and verification, and built-in audit/replicate commands that compare paper claims against real code and plan replication experiments. It supports local models via LM Studio, LiteLLM, Ollama, or vLLM, and can sign in to hosted providers like OpenRouter or GitHub Copilot. Installation is a one-line script on macOS/Linux/Windows, with an npm alternative, and a skills-only installer for Codex, Claude, OpenCode, and other agent environments.
