Self-hosted open-source wiki & docs with real-time collaboration and built-in diagrams.
Core Features
- Real-time collaborative editing
- Built-in diagrams (Draw.io, Excalidraw, Mermaid)
- Org spaces for document isolation
- Granular permissions (view, edit, comment)
- Comments, page history, full-text search
What It Can't Do
- •1) AGPL-3.0 license restricts commercial closed-source use; enterprise features need a paid license. 2) Self-hosting requires server admin skills, not for beginners. 3) Some integrations (e.g., Algolia search) need separate API keys when self-hosted. 4) Compared to Notion, mobile experience and plugin ecosystem are less mature.
Use Cases
- Internal company wiki replacing Confluence/Notion
- Technical documentation for development teams
- Shared notes and guidelines in project collaboration
Detailed Introduction
Docmost is an open-source collaborative wiki and documentation platform that enables teams to create, organize, and share knowledge in real time. It supports rich editing with embedded diagrams (Draw.io, Excalidraw, Mermaid), multiple spaces, granular permissions, comments, page history, full-text search, file attachments, and integrations like Airtable, Loom, and Miro. It is self-hosted, respects data privacy, and comes with a cloud version. The core is AGPL-3.0 licensed, while enterprise features (e.g., single sign-on, audit logs) require a paid license.
Troubleshooting & FAQ (2)
TroubleshootingHow to insert manual page breaks in Docmost for PDF export?
Manual page breaks are now supported in Docmost. Use the /pagebreak command to insert a page break. The PDF export will respect these breaks, allowing you to control pagination. This feature was added in version 0.90.
TroubleshootingHow to fix 'AzureDriver: accountName is required' error when starting Docmost?
This error occurs due to a duplicate STORAGE_DRIVER definition in .env.example, where the Azure block overrides the default local driver even when Azure isn't configured. Workaround: Edit .env.example and comment out or remove the duplicate STORAGE_DRIVER line under the Azure section. Alternatively, wait for the next release, which includes a fix in the main branch.
