Model-agnostic open-source AI coding agent for terminal, IDE, desktop, and CI/CD pipelines.

Core Features

  • Autonomous multi-file code editing with real-time linter and compiler error monitoring
  • Plan/Act modes with human-in-the-loop approval for every change
  • Works with Claude, GPT, Gemini, OpenRouter, and local models via Ollama
  • Headless CLI mode with JSON output designed for CI/CD automation
  • Extensible via MCP servers, plugin SDK, multi-agent teams, and cron schedules

What It Can't Do

  • •Note: Cline itself is free and open source, but cloud models like Claude or GPT require your own API key with pay-per-use billing—complex tasks can burn tokens quickly. Local models via Ollama need decent hardware, and smaller models are noticeably less capable. The JetBrains plugin is currently closed-source. In auto-approve mode the agent edits files and runs shell commands without confirmation, so use caution in production environments.

Use Cases

  • Automating cross-file refactoring and fixing compiler errors as they appear
  • Running tests, fixing bugs, and reviewing code inside CI/CD pipelines
  • Building custom AI coding tools and internal automations with the SDK

Cline is an open-source (Apache 2.0) autonomous coding agent with 70k+ GitHub stars, available as a terminal CLI, VS Code extension, JetBrains plugin, native desktop app, and Node.js SDK. Unlike proprietary tools such as Cursor or GitHub Copilot, Cline is fully model-agnostic: use Claude, GPT, Gemini, 200+ OpenRouter models, AWS Bedrock, or local models via Ollama—no vendor lock-in. It edits code across multiple files, executes terminal commands, and monitors linter and compiler errors in real time. Plan/Act modes with human-in-the-loop approval keep you in control, while auto-approve enables full autonomy. Standout features include a headless CLI for CI/CD pipelines, cron-scheduled agents, multi-agent teams, MCP server extensibility, and Slack/Telegram/Discord integrations. Compared to Aider, Cline offers deeper IDE integration and a richer plugin ecosystem, making it one of the most flexible open-source AI coding assistants available.
