Privacy-first, customizable comment widget that replaces Disqus with real-time features.

Core Features

  • Privacy-friendly: no tracking, anonymous sign-in supported
  • Highly customizable: themes, layout, and behavior
  • Real-time comments: instant updates without reload
  • Notifications: email and web push for new comments
  • Anti-toxic comment: automatic spam and abuse filter

What It Can't Do

  • The hosted plan has a free tier with monthly comment limits; paid plans for higher volume. Self-hosting is possible but requires managing your own infrastructure.

Use Cases

  • Add a modern, privacy-conscious comment system to blogs, documentation sites, or SaaS products.

Detailed Introduction

Chirpy is an open-source comment widget that replaces Disqus while respecting user privacy. It offers real-time discussions, rich text formatting with Markdown shortcuts, email and web push notifications, anti-toxic comment filtering, and anonymous sign-in. The widget is fully customizable with themes and integrates analytics for site owners. Built with Next.js, tRPC, and Prisma, it supports self-hosting or the hosted service at chirpy.dev. Unlike Disqus, Chirpy does not track users or sell data, and provides a modern, developer-friendly experience.

Troubleshooting & FAQ (1)

Troubleshooting
How to add JSON-LD structured data to Chirpy theme comments for improved Google indexing?

The Chirpy theme now includes built-in JSON-LD markup for comments, using the DiscussionForumPosting schema from Schema.org. This ensures each comment is properly structured for search engines. To use it, update to the latest Chirpy release. After updating, validate the markup with Google's Rich Results Test tool. If you're on an older version, apply the patch from the PR associated with issue #592.
